Sheer and light fragrances are perfect gifts for Valentine's
Posted Feb 5, 2010 By Kimberly LochheadEMC Lifestyle Fragrances have proved to often be the choice gift of affordable luxury for Valentine's Day, and this season many designers have launched new scents in line with the romantic holiday that are sheer and light.
This new take on fragrances is a pleasant departure from the heavy aromas of the past that were too strong and overpowering for some tastes.
"It's going to be a very exciting season," said Sid Cratzbarg, fragrance stylist at Holt Renfrew.
"For Vogue International, we launched the Dolce and Gabbana Anthology collection. It's the hottest thing right now and the ultimate art of self expression, because there are five different fragrances."
With the ability to choose different scents, Mr. Cratzbarg, a Barrhaven resident, added that the collection allows one to express whichever personality they feel at the time and transcends sexuality because it is a shared fragrance for men and women.
"The two that are fabulous for Valentine's Day are Le Bateleur, which means the 'seducer,' which is extremely appealing to men," he said. "It has juniper berries and coriander. The other, L'Amoureux, means the 'charmer' and is also appealing to the men because it is a woody aromatic."
Gucci's Flora is also a seasonal favourite launched a while ago, however the company has now come out with an eau de parfum version for Valentine's Day.
"It's a richer concentration and unbelievable," said Mr. Cratzbarg. "The notes in it are so different with roses from Monaco and very exotic flower from China called an osmanthus. It's feminine and Gucci is just iconic."
For men, there is Gucci by Gucci pour homme, a masculine and sensual smell. Dolce and Gabbana also has a men's fragrance called The One, an elegant and seductive scent with cedar and grapefruit aromas. With actress Scarlett Johansson as cover girl, Dolce and Gabbana also released Rose the One this summer, another of Mr. Cratzbarg's picks for Valentine's Day for the 'contemporary diva.'
Burberry's newest scent called Burberry Sport for men is hip with wood and citrus notes, including grapefruit and ginger. Burberry Sport for women is energizing and fresh, with mandarin and sea salt.
"The other trend is getting back to the classics," he added. "We can be part of the fragrance world and all the high-end designer brands, which are part of the luxury world."
These exclusive fragrances include Canali for men, Ferre for women, Escada and Bvlgari.
"So many of the fragrances are now lighter and more sheer, so it avoids any sensitivities to scent," explained Mr. Cratzbarg. "It really makes a difference. Fragrances are an accessory and personality of who you are. Everybody has an individual scent and it can be their signature."
