Hotspurs reach Ontario Indoor Cup semi-finals
Posted Feb 26, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC News - The Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club (NHSC) is pleased to announce that the Nepean Hotspurs Selects (U15GL3) had a very successful Valentine's Day weekend, making it to the semi-final round at the 2010 Ontario Indoor Cup U15G tournament, which was held at the Soccer Centre in Vaughn, Ont.
In the first game of the tournament's round robin phase, the Selects played the Wexford Wildcats (U15G OYSL), who are ranked third in Ontario. Down 1-0 at half, the Selects came back with great goals from Kristi Korycki-Striegler and Rebecca Watson to take the lead. They dominated in the second half. Backstopped by stellar goaltending from Cassandra DaSilva, the Selects registered a 2-1 victory over Wexford.
The second game saw the Selects facing the Mississauga Dixie Athletics. First half goals by Watson and Korycki-Striegler, combined with possession soccer in the second half, resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Selects.
In the third game, the Selects faced another very strong OYSL team in the Aurora Stingers who are ranked fifth in Ontario. Although both teams were guaranteed spots in the semi-final round, the game promised to be a spirited affair as the teams vied for first place in their pool.
Playing hard from the opening whistle, the Selects scored twice before the game was five minutes old on outstanding efforts from Watson and Alyssa Capon. Determination and another excellent performance from DaSilva between the pipes resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Selects.
However, the physical match saw three red cards (with two to the Selects) and five yellows.
Nevertheless, the conclusion of the round robin phase saw the Selects in first place in their pool with a 3-0 record, and only one goal against. The Selects were the only team in both pools to win all three round robin games.
Sunday's semi-final match against the Erin Mills Mighty Eagles was going to be a challenge for the Selects who were down to one sub due to Saturday's red cards. While the Selects managed a spirited first half holding Ontario's ninth ranked team to a scoreless draw, the Selects short bench saw the exhausted girls surrender five goals to Erin Mills in the second half.
The entire Hotspurs family congratulates Coach Louis, Coach Greg, manager Todd, trainer Maria and the Selects Cassandra DaSilva, Alyssa Capon, Taylor Macmillan, Emily Copeland-Dinan, Victoria Tegano, Jessica Maneiro, Sarah Osborne, Kristi Korycki-Striegler and Rebecca Watson for an outstanding effort and for representing the club so well.
