EMC News - The City of Ottawa is celebrating Earth Hour and will be asking all residents to participate in the campaign scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Earth Hour is a global campaign, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to join together to demonstrate how a small effort like turning off a light for one hour can make a real difference to our environment.
This year, organizers hope to reach one billion people in more than 1,000 cities around the world.
"I am extremely proud that Ottawa was one of the first cities in the world to be part of the Earth Hour campaign, and we are delighted once again to participate," said Mayor Larry O'Brien. "We each have a role to play in fostering the long-term sustainability of our city, and I encourage individuals, schools, businesses, and governments to participate in this initiative."
"The city has an important role to play in making life better for families by conserving and protecting the health of our environment and building a greener city," said Coun. Peter Hume, chair of the city's planning and environment committee. "Earth Hour is a chance to think about the difference we can all make at home, work and in the community. It's about more than just one hour. It's about inspiring people to make changes in their everyday lives that will reduce their carbon footprint."
The City and its partners will be reaching out to businesses and residents over the next six weeks to encourage them to shut off all non-essential lighting for Earth Hour.
"Earth Hour encourages us to think about how we use electricity - and how we can use a bit less of it - while having a little fun with friends and family without some of the usual electronic distractions," said Rosemarie Leclair, President and CEO of Hydro Ottawa, one of the partnering agencies.
"Ottawa residents have found some wonderfully creative ways to celebrate this hour over the past couple of years, and I'm looking forward to seeing some of the fun ideas they'll come up with this year."
