Report juvenile prostitutes, say police
Posted Mar 5, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC News - During the month of January, the Ottawa Police Service Guns and Gangs unit conducted an investigation into the enticement of young women into the sex trade.
During the investigation, police determined that a member of the Crips street gang was involved in leading young females into the act of prostitution.
On January 28, Ottawa resident Mohamad Said Barkhadle, 25, was charged with procuring, living on the avails, living on the avails of a juvenile prostitute using violence, and breach of probation. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 25.
It is most often young women, who are habitual runaways or missing persons, who have a greater risk of being coerced into the sex trade.
"The suspects, generally male, end up in a parasitic relationship with young vulnerable women, taking control of their life and forcing them into acts of prostitution," said acting staff sergeant Mark Patterson.
The Ottawa Police Service is encouraging the public to report juvenile prostitution. Anyone with information is asked to contact the guns and gangs unit at 613-236-1222 ext 5050 or youth section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5355.
