University student running for mayor
Posted Jul 29, 2010 By Jessica BellEMC News - Residents are only a few months away from casting their votes on who will become the next mayor of Ottawa, and candidate Eric Romolock's name will be on the ballot.
The 20-year-old University of Ottawa student is running for mayor and says that if elected he would implement several changes, many of which would make the capital city more youth oriented.
"I'd like to make the city more youth friendly," said Mr. Romolock, who is in his third year of studying political science and German at the university. "I'd bring more tourists to Ottawa."
Mr. Romolock, who plays rugby and grew up in Carleton Place and Ottawa, said that on the list of important issues he is promoting is art in the city, including street art and high-culture art. Mr. Romolock said he would also like to see more high school art and theatre programs, as well as more youth-oriented music festivals.
Being a student himself, he said he also hopes to make public transit more affordable. He said he would implement a system where transit would run 24 hours a day so as to avoid having to pay for taxis or other, more expensive modes of transportation.
"Even if I don't get elected I feel I have a lot of issues I can bring to the table," he said. "There are a lot of good ideas coming from young people."
On top of the list of changes Mr. Romolock would make are adjustments to the current biking system. He said he would like to more bike lanes that are physically divided from the main roadway.
Mr. Romolock also said he hopes to create a greener Ottawa with green protection, where tax incentives are granted for residents that plant trees or provide green space.
